Do I need a CSCS card to work on site?
Most main contractors and sites now ask for one. The card you need depends on your role and qualifications. If you operate plant, that usually means a Red NPORS card to start, then a Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card once you hold the NVQ.
What's the difference between the Red and Blue card?
The Red Experienced Worker card is a starting point, valid while you work towards full qualification. The Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card is the competent operator card employers want long term. Going from Red to Blue needs both an Experienced Operator Test and a Level 2 NVQ.
I've operated machines for years but never got certified. What do I do?
Book an Experienced Operator Test. An assessor checks you can operate safely and to standard, and you come away with a Red NPORS card. From there you can go on to the NVQ for your Blue card.
How does the NVQ work? Do I have to sit in a classroom?
No week off work. The Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations is assessed in the cab on a live operating site while you do your normal job. An assessor watches you work and builds a portfolio of evidence. There's a short sign-off session at our office, but the bulk is done on site.
Can I do the NVQ if I'm not currently working on site?
No. The NVQ is workplace-assessed, so you need to be currently employed or self-employed and operating the machine. If you're between jobs, an Experienced Operator Test may be the better route for now.
Is funding available?
Funding may be available for eligible candidates in Wales through the ReAct+ programme, which can cover the full cost of a Level 2 NVQ. Eligibility criteria apply. Contact us and we'll check whether you qualify.
Which machines can I get trained or tested on?
360 excavators, forward and rear tipping dumpers, telehandlers, rollers, loading shovels, slinger and signaller, MEWPs and more. See the plant training page for the full NPORS list, or ask us about a machine that isn't listed.
Do you come to our site?
Yes. As well as our centres in Retford and Cwmbran, we deliver training and testing on-site anywhere in England and Wales. On-site is priced individually to cover travel and time. Ask us for a quote.
How long does a course take?
It depends on the course and your experience. A full plant training course for a new operator runs over several days. An Experienced Operator Test is usually a day. Tell us your machine and background and we'll give you a straight answer.
Are you NPORS or CPCS?
We certify through NPORS, which sits within the CSCS Alliance. We are not a CPCS provider. An NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo is accepted on the same sites as CPCS.
What do I need to bring?
Photo ID and your National Insurance number as a minimum, plus any existing cards. For NVQ enrolment we'll email you a full list once you've applied. Bring your own PPE if you have it, or let us know and we'll sort it.
How do I book?
Fill in the enquiry form, call 01777 948 490, or message us on WhatsApp on 07934 250340. Tell us the course or machine you're after and where you're based, and we'll come back with dates and next steps.
Still Not Sure?
Tell us your card, your machine and where you work. We'll point you at the right course.
